Identification: No idea what it is, possibly tropical?

Hello,

I'm totally new here and would appreciate help with identifying a plant in my home. It seems to be doing fine, but we've been giving it the same amount of water as our more common house plants and its not in a particularly well light section of the house, and since it seems somewhat exotic, we would like to know what we could do better for it.
