Just before holiday i sat my tomato plants in trays of water ( as it is summer time here and i was worried about them drying up ) but I must have really damaged them by over watering when i got back some of the leaves were yellow and the 2 plants both wilted. I took the trays of water out and though i would let the soil dry out , IT DID NOT its been 3 days now so what i did was changed all of the soil and re potted with new potting mix and have now bought them indoors ... what do you guys think the chances are of their survival? Any other tips would also be appreciated. Thanks
They've got a chance if you keep them in part shade, and then just let them alone for about a week. After that, start watering in very small amounts with dilute fertilizer in the water and they should perk right back up.
Well it took a lot of care but i have started to notice new growth sprouting , i have been easy with the watering , next week i will start the fertilizer .. now it's just some time until they start fruiting .. the flowers have already started to bloom .. anyone know how long tomato plants will live for ? Is it annual?
Tomatoes in the subtropical climes such as Auckland, should do well this time of year, maybe pots are restricting growth, and they should be outside with a minimum direct sunlight of 8-12 hours... It has been 20 years since I have enjoyed the sights of the North Island.
Yea i will move them out as soon as they are doing a bit better from the incident , i only have a balcony so can only be restricted to pot planting ... however i walked past a house the other day and there was a gigantic tomato plant growing in a big pot it must be more than a meter high .. it had to have some stems suspended from strings !! Although no tomato present yet .. Ya Auckland is great but this summer has been really unsettled though ..
