I bought and planted some grafted crimson seedless vines about 5 years ago from the local nursery. They have grown well with pruning every year During the summer they grow vigourous vines with plenty of green leaves but never produce any grapes It is a mediterranean climate here in Perth with lots of vineyards Any suggestions would be appreciated Philip
You need to find out which pruning group this cultivar belongs to, look for discussion of pruning grapes on the internet for pointers. Try searching "grapes pruning" etc. (book GOOGLE HACKS says to start with name of larger subject in search string first and then narrow it down).
Thxs Ron If I'm supposed to get flowers then I've definitely been pruning them too short. http://www.ehow.com/how_172725_prune-grape-vine.html says to leave 12 buds (after the third year) on each trained branch off the main trunk. Grapes should grow off these buds. I'll pruning like that this winter and keep my fingers crossed Cheers Philip
Hi phillip. Grapes produce fruit on wood that grew the previous year. Here's a website to help you out. http://cetulare.ucdavis.edu/pubgrape/tb1600.pdf Cheers
Thxs for the info Does this mean that if I do not prune at all, then there will be more grapes next year ?
