    Hello

I am a photographer based in Calgary specializing in garden and botanical subjects and would like to enter one of my photographs of the Nitobi Japanese Garden in to the Royal Horticultural Society’s annual Garden Photography Contest. The RHS requires that I have prior permission for entries of private or public gardens and so I am writing to request permission to enter my photograph (attached) in the Garden Views category of the RHS competition http://www.rhs.org.uk/news/photocomp.asp

Also, if you have any further information regarding any symbolism involved in the garden design that relates to my photo and the scientific name of the three trees in the foreground of my image I would greatly appreciate your help with that.

I must have my entry in by mid October so please respond as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

I will have to check with Daniel Mosquin on our photo policy. I try to find out the names of the trees, when I can speak with someone who knows the plants in the Nitobe Memorial Garden.

    David,
Hi! I'm Tom Wheeler, UBCBG Horticulturist Special Projects.

A common mistake--it's not Nitobi; it's Nitobe. Nitobe Memorial Garden rather than eg. Nitobe Japanese Garden. You're correct it is a Japanese Garden though.
I am knowledgeable about Nitobe Memorial Garden plants (NMG)--I co-inventoried NMG & co-id. NMG plants of uncertainty.

From your photo I'd say they are 3 Acer palmatum (Japanese maple). I can't zoom in
so I can't check bark. I'm 95% sure. If you read from me again it will be to correct.
I'll see if I can find any symbolism related to maples in JG. We do not have anything prepared. If no answer from me, you're out of luck.
    Tom
