What plant is this? Is it in the Nightshade family and one of the plants from which scopolomine is made?

Datura, probably D. stramontium given your location. It is indeed one of the scopalamine plants.

Lorax thank you again. I didn´t take this photo and I don´t know where it was taken. It may or may not have been taken in Colombia.

Well, it could very well have been. Daturas are weeds in both our countries, and fairly widespread ones at that.

Yes digging around I´m seeing it´s very widespread. Also I see Brugmansia species often refered to as Datura. Aparently they are two closely related genus both in the Solanaceae family but Brugmansias are small trees (I have them on my finca) and Daturas are plants up to about 2m high. Is that correct?

I've always made the distinction thusly: Datura are herbs, lasting one season and producing no woody trunks. Brugmansia are trees, lasting many seasons and producing wood. There are a few distinctions in flower structure as well, and in the appearance of the seed pods.

The two genera were only recently separated along those basic lines, which is why it's fairly common to see Brugs referred to as Datura.
