I moved to Greenwood last spring, after many years in a condo in the lower mainland, and have been discovering things new to me. The first subject I'm curious about is toxic metals. A few months in, my neighbour told me that the soil was toxic because the house is built on a slag pile. (I didn't know that) I did have a poor garden and in the fall I sent a soil sample to be tested and found the soil contains high levels of different heavy metals; esp. arsenic so I threw out all the produce and preserves I had laid up. It looks like the only option I have is to build raised beds but finances are tight and I'm trying to come up with a plan for the next 4-5 years to get me there. I'll have to work in increments. So: A few questions to start: I understand that some veggies and fruits absorb more contaminants than others, which would be the safest fruits to plant, if there are any? I want to have a hedge about 6-7 feet tall for privacy. What would be the best hedge to plant? Any feedback is appreciated. I am not finding it easy to get the info. I want on the internet, so far.
I'd move. Any time you are exposed to the soil, including dust from it you are being exposed to the toxins. Definitely do not track dirt into the house!
Thank you for your reply. I certainly hear you but am not able to make a move for at least 2-3 years. My plan for the present is to plant a hedge for privacy and shade and put the rest of the garden spaces to grass. I have, unfortunately, committed to major work in the house and won't be finished for a year or two. In the meantime I'll be tying to finish the yard as attractively and as cost effectively as I can. I was hoping I'd not have to take out the fruit canes and trees. I suspect I won't be able to use the fruit that's here. I expect the trees will be used for shade only. The town has been here for 120 years and when I talk to the provincial environment office regarding the soil I find out that the whole area might be contaminated. If my own property was the only one affected (it's not) I'd have to remove the top 18-24 inches of soil and replace it with good soil. For now, it looks like everybody is closing one eye and looking the other direction.
Google suitable phrases for more information before doing anymore puttering about in the yard. All disturbance and transporting of - and exposure to - your soil should be minimized, if it is known to be contaminated.
