I just bought an old place with alot of landscape already in place, I know pretty much what everything else is except for this guy. I live in the east bay, ca and I've seen some other ones (usually growing wild by the freeway. Was bare over winter and now has some leaves. One of the neighbors says it blooms every spring but was not sure what it was. Any ideas? 100_4605.jpg

Yep, Ailanthus altissima. A nasty weed.

Thanks for your help! I did some poking around now that I had a proper name to go by and you are right, seems like a nuisance to have in the garden (and smelly too). It's a shame though because its off-shoots (which is all I have growing out of the ground) are quite beautiful, majestic even.

Anyway, I've been curious for months now and this forum has really been quite a refreshing way to find out.

    Thanks again.
