New to Trees, plants & the garden

    Hi, Please help identify this tree. It is about 3ft tall. Leaves are green in the front & purple on the back & they are all consolidated towards the top of the trunk. Trunk is tall & skinny about ½ " dia. The tree is in South Africa. I have placed a permanent marker against the trunk to indicate size.

    In the first picture it looks like the leaves are alternate, not opposite. If so, not a maple.

    Right. Makes me rather think of some species of begonia: wrong forum ;-)
