We love the looks of JM's and i had 1 small one at our old home that i loved...we have a corner house and the front/side yard corner needs a tree...we want a tall (18' ish) JM, would love the multi trunk look, but i do know thats an odd request... it gets good sun, but does shade over some, we will put a fence up after we plant one, so then it would get some wind protection...we have a watering system so it will never be dry...we live in the Northeast so we get cold winters and nice warm summers i have been looking into Sango-Kaku but would love advice for any JM...we will eventually put a small ornamental one in a garden plan, once i design the garden....i have a blank slate to work with here thank you
Hi my advice is not for JM Sango kaku but for acer Davidii or Tegmentosum because the trunk of S.k. not remain red for many years,Davidii (and cultivar like Rosalie)and Tegmentosum have a beautiful trunk for all the life
What is it that you loved about your maple? Was it the leaf, the bark or the form? Tell us about your soil, and the exact position of your site in regards to the sun, how much sun will it get it, when will it get this sun, all day, midday or just in the afternoon, what is your USDA Zone and does your soil drain well. White Tigress is a hansom tree, no doubt. There are several different species of Japanese Maples, which one are you speaking of? I like Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' and A. s. 'Autumn Moon' this tree is Hardy to USDA Zone 6 or Acer japonicum 'O taki' it is Hardy to USDA Zone 5. I am going to bet you are in a Zone 5, is that right? How about Acer pensylvanicum Erythrocladum yea that is it, a Zone 3 tree with red bark. That will be twenty five dollars or just join the maple society. '[:) I still like that snake bark, Alex told you about. I think the two together would look smashing.
Sango kaku, as my friends Alex and Richard know, turns into a big tree eventually. A spectacular 600 year old specimen was featured in the recent Maple Society newsletter. What a tree! I found the winter picture spectacular, a halo of red in the sky... All of MA is very suitable for growing A. palmatum (what most people think of as Japanese Maple and the species of Sango kaku.) There are many specimens, they love the soil in many places (not too heavy), the climate seems OK. I'll bet pennsylvanicum would do very well there, nice cold winter. It is not so easy here in Normandie though where it leafs out much too early. I suspect I have killed my nice seed grown species tree here this spring (pseudomonas low on the trunk). You might consider trying Eddisbury instead of Sango kaku, it is a little less tricky, and grows a bit faster. Otherwise Autumn Moon is good idea, but only if you're immortal! :) It's a very slow grower. One of the davidii cultivars like Karmen or Rosalie would fit the bill. Alex does tegmentosum reach 18 ft? I thought it was a smaller tree. How about japonicum 'Vitifolium' which is a fast grower and makes a beautiful multi-stemmed tree? -E
@Emery according "Maples for the Garden" the eigth max of acer Tegmentosum is 33 ft= 10 m in nature i presume .yes good pics in spring news letter ;but one questions Sanko Kaku is one cultivar 600 years old? gaspp!!
I stand corrected on tegmentosum size! Anyway Alex I know this is one of your favourites. As for the 600 year old SK: why not? Looked like plenty of scion wood on that thing. :) Maybe if the meeting next year is in Japan we can all snitch some. -E
How do you feel about Acer x conspicuum ‘Phoenix’ Each picture is a link to nurseries that have them, just right click to open their link in new tab or window. This is Rob's link for this tree : http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=9312
