Welcome to the Forum! Give us more information. A photo would be most helpful. Sudden changes in light or temperature could cause leaf drop, as could under/overwatering. How long have you had the plant? Where is it located? Any evidence of disease or insect infestation?
Firstly, thanks for replying. I've had the plant for about a month. The only signs are tiny white dots on all the leaves. I'm not sure what this is. Could it be whitefly? Also it is opposite a west facing window that gets light in the evening. It was in my bedroom at around 18-23 degrees celcius, which is were it was losing many of its leaves. I have started misting it and also feeding it but im not sure how much good it is doing, but it hasnt dropped anymore leaves since i moved it and started feeding it. Should i stop feeding it in the winter? sorry but i can't give you any pics. sorry again.
First of all: I am assuming that by 'rubber plant' you mean Ficus elastica, aka Rubber Plant or Tree. Might be scale insects or mealybugs. Take a look at this: http://ehow.com/facts_5074578_ficus-tree-scale-disease.html My experience with Ficus has taught me that they do NOT like to be moved around, or changes of any kind. I'd say that yours was telling you that it was displeased at being moved from where you got it to your place, and that it was getting less light and lower temps than it was used to. Since you say that it has stopped the leaf drop, it may like its new spot. ---Losing old bottom leaves is OK...it's when the plant is losing a LOT of leaves, and ones that are mushy (overwatered) or crispy (underwatered) or curled/distorted (bugs) that an emergency should be declared. Address the pest situation ASAP, before the things proliferate and do any further damage to your plant. Individual bugs can be removed with a Q-tip moistened with rubbing alcohol: keep in mind that you will likely have to do this more than once. And yes, do cut back on the feeding in the winter months. So: get rid of the bugs; be sure that the pot has good drainage; keep the soil evenly moist, never dry or soggy; and don't move it! Good luck to you!
Good advice togata! My experience is to keep the well drained medium dry between waterings...maybe not the rule here.... though is is pooted in doors, well actually a heated solarium...and it thrives on neglect and lack of watering.
