I planted some new certified raspberry canes in the fall and now these ones are starting to die off as well. They didn't grow very well and there are very few of them with new growth on them. The canes have dark sploches all the way up. I did spray them in February with a dormant spray and again, I'm losing them all!! What's going on? We have sandy soil that has been built up with compost and manure over the years and I use to have fantastic raspberries. For the past 3 years I have been throwing money away on plants that keep dying on me. I did check the soil and it's at 5 which apparently is where it's suppose to be. What do I do now? Our family loves raspberries.

Are you planting the raspberries in the same location where raspberries were previously growing? Diseases build up in the soil, and new canes should be planted in soil where raspberries have not grown for a number of years.

Yes I had. I did remove the soil 12 inches down and 12 inches across and put in soil from the nursery mixed with manure.
