Amazon informs me a "new" pocket guide has been released by Timber Press, covering "300 popular cultivars" and written by Vertrees/Gregory. Has anyone taken a look at the book? Does it offer information or photos beyond "Japanese Maples?" (The Timber Press site says it does, just wondering if anyone has seen it yet.) -E
emery, I received the book on Monday of this week and I am pleased with the smaller format. There seems to be information and pictures of a lot of the newer cultivars although I have not done a side by side comparison. I think it is well worth the introduction price. I found that when I signed up at Timber Press to be notified of the release I also received a 30% discount. Ed
Thanks Ed. If it has information on new cultivars like the Ghost series, I'll certainly get it. Price is pretty good, too. -E
Just got my copy today It seems to be good value for money, and in a handy format A good read for this evening maybe?
Ditto what NJACER has said. Got mine a week ago & pre-release registration price was great. The smaller size format lets me carry it around my garden for leaf comparisons. Excellent new photos (many of Talon's Ghost series). The only flaw I have seen so far is Murakumo which is correctly pictured & listed as a green but sadly wrongly described as a red. The editor should have caught that. Peter Gregory is to be congratulated for his fine hard work in adding this book to our bibliography. I'm sure many of our own forum members contributed to Peter's effort. Well done.
Just received my book today at lunch, Great size and lots of new pictures, descriptions, etc. I like the soft back cover and feel that this book is more "field friendly" then the 3rd edition. I think that another error is the omission of "Inaba Shidare" from page 80 and page 1, which i can't even find! There is a reference on page 131 however. This omission seems strange since this is such a popular tree. Swanny
Finally received my copy today. Certainly a nice addition to the available books. Lots of new cultivars listed with pictures. In fact there seems to be a picture for each cultivar, the lack of which I've always found annoying in the 3rd edition. Recommended.
I haven't seen the pocket/field guide edition yet. I would definitely buy a fourth edition if it had more info on Summer grafting, Tight bark, which cultivars have become diluted, more and better pictures, and of course all the new cultivars. anyone else have more to add to my fourth edition 'wish list'???
How about a pictorial of each cultivar, spring, summer, fall, and winter juvenile & mature leaf leaf closeup at actual size Mike
Yes, especially if most of your trees are young like mine. I have been planning on doing this as mine get more mature. I have talked with oithers about working together, since we each may have different cultivars. Would love to chat with you via email and discuss this topic. Mike
I have mine signed by Peter..... He is working on the 4th edition of 'Japanese Maples' where many of the desired additional information are included (nothing on tight bark though ;o)) Gomero
Now that i have a lot of time on my hands i have been reading my pocket book more. I have noticed that there seems to be a lot of mistakes. Anyone else notice that a lot of the pictures seem to be mislabeled?
No they are the same old pictures, it dose have a couple of the new and or renamed cultivars. This book is not a substitute in any way shape or form for the 3rd ed J.M. The book really isn't small enough to be a pocket guide, it is about 16 X 22 cm and 12 mm thick. You could drill a hole in it and hang it around your neck maybe. Then you could call it the easy money naked guide to japanes maples. Well that's the way I have feeling about it tonight, anyways. I do think it is worth thirteen dollars , if only for the for the newly inclulded trees. http://www.tower.com/details/details.cfm?wapi=100217926
No they reuse a bunch, but there are new ones.....i think every single maple has a picture. I love the extra pictures but many of them seem to be mislabeled. Also a lot of the pictures are poor quality, either out of focus, bad lighting, or posted sideways.
