I've been wracking my brain trying to remember the name of this plant. We had one at a rental property, which for some reason we were determined to get rid of (the smell?). I remember that it was remarkably resistant to our efforts. I believe this may be a type of Arum - perhaps Arum dracunculus, also known as Dracunculus vulgaris.

Yes: Definitely a dragon arum. Used to just be seen in yards down here, now garden centers also sell it. Called voodoo lily on internet, but that used to be Sauromatum only, probably the two became confused.

Wow! After reading all the posts I immediately put in an order for the plant. Usually I try for something interesting to add to the garden each year. This plant sounds like a great candidate.

The flowering plant can be pretty tall. If you get fruit it looks like a bright orange corncob.

the purple leaf is the flower bract similar to that found in other relatives of this plant (Calla lilies and skunk cabbages).

in some of these the "flower" technically it is a group of flowers in this plant produce a foul smell for a short while days or even hours and then die off.

if the rest of your plant is looking green and healthy and only the purple piece then it is ok its just doing what it is supposed to do

p.s I think I agree its Dracunculus vulgaris been racking my brain for it!!!!!!

Move it to a shadier spot and give it a good soaking if the soil seems dry when it is dug.

Can anyone tell me what is the zone for the dragon lily. I am zone 5 and it showed up in my flower bed and I am afraid it wont make it through the winter here.
