Hello. I am from Ontario and just purchased a house in Kelowna. The lot is 1/3 of an acre and desperately in need of some garden design. The first thing is creating screening at the back to hide new homes on the next street and screening on the sides to provide more privacy from neighbours.

I am willing to put a hedge in or put in some mature evergreen trees. I am concerned about the dry periods here and would rather work with the environment and get some drought resistant plants. One nursery tried to stear me away from a hedge saying it required too much water while a tree farmer suggested that once the hedge is established, there is no problem.

I would welcome any thougths on a hedge, drought resistant evergreens and preliminary garden design.

    Thanks so much.

Do you have a map or drawing of your yard to share?

As for the hedge - are you up in the hills surrounding the town or closer to the lake in a more urban area?

    Hello,

I don't have a map. It is actually a flat site, 22 by 68 metres. We are in a lower part of town but neither close to hills or lake. The screening is to hide a new development on the street behind us. i am debating between a hedge or simply a few well placed evergreens (Large like a fir tree). I have always liked the privacy of a hedge but the water requirements scare me.

    Thanks for your help.

I think lots of pretty things to look at to distract from what you are trying to hide can be as effective as hiding the view. In other words, create other focal points.

Sorry, I don't have any advice on the hedge, but you could try asking neighbours with hedges on whether they need to water theirs.
