thank you for the prompt reply. Are they common plants? There is another ivy growing in my yard that has leaves that are light green in the center and white edges. any ideas?

Hedera helix is very common both as a house plant in cooler climates and outside in warmer areas. They are usually the ivy that you see growing on walls and fences and can become quite invasive.

The other ivy you mention could be a Hedera helix also but it's really impossible to tell without pix.
