    Hi,

My name is Rune Davidsen and am a student at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. I'm currently in the making of my graduation film and need some help and resources to design a small garden / flower arrangement.

I'm making a film titled First Man on the Sun. Long story short; it's about a crew of 12 people sent on a mission to investigate the sun. A garden has been grown and cultivated aboard a spaceship for the purpose of investigating the photosynthesis of the plants when exposed closer to the sun. It has also been grown to support the ship with oxygen and food for the crew. It is obviously a science fiction / fantasy story, but it has a criterion of authenticity to it. To spoil the plot of the story, I would like to include that the sun is not what it seems, but rather a hive of luminescent insects who migrate from stars to pulsars.

I'm not looking for something extremely elaborate, but if someone has access to a greenhouse, an indoor garden, a conservatory or anything like that - and feel compelled to help me after reading all of this, then please don't hesitate to contact me. If you should happen to have any advice or am in the position of offering to sponsor or donate flowers, plants or anything at all, then that would be welcomed with open arms as well.

    My email is: davidsen_rune@hotmail.com

I have included the synopsis of the film below if anyone should be interested.

    FIRST MAN ON THE SUN

    by Rune Davidsen

    Description:

First Man on the Sun is an introduction to an adventurous space opera set in the later half of the 21st century. Mankind has left its cradle to study the symbiosis between our planet and the sun. This endeavour turns out to be more illuminating than expected for a small crew aboard the vessel Infrared Ridinghood.

    Synopsis:

The story begins when the spaceship is arriving at its destination, entering orbit around the sun.

A garden has been grown and cultivated in a glass domed structure aboard the ship. The garden has been grown and transported closer to the sun to investigate if the close proximity of the sun has a positive or negative effect in regards to the photosynthesis of the vegetation.

On the journey most members of the crew, except for a few loners, have divided into three quarreling factions. While they’re arguing among themselves, they discover traces of unwanted visitors aboard the ship. When inspecting the solar sails after retraction, they notice an unusual pattern in the metal framework. It turns out that insects have hollowed out hexagonal pockets in the metal, encapsuled themselves with a hardened wax material and infiltrated the ship.

The insects are hybrids of honeybees, wasps and hornets that live in the vacuum of space. It turns out that the sun is a giant hive of luminescent insects migrating from stars to pulsars. Drones have been sent from their hive, the sun, to collect any resources that might be found on the ship. The crew unites in their task to figure out how to get rid of the insects. Meanwhile, the insects have managed to collect pollen from every plant onboard.

Chrysanthemums have been particularly disturbed by the alien insects, whereby all the pollen has been removed.

The sun seems to be affected by these incidents. It turns out that the sun has dropped in several degrees.

Earth is entering a potential ice age, which the crew has to prevent from further development. Humanity is preparing for an exodus into outer space and a sheltered existence on Earth. Natural distasters becomes an everyday occurance in some regions of the planet.

The crew gather in teams to explore the surface of the sun, which has become so temperate that different structures and patterns can be seen from orbit.

    Realization:

Several scientists, engineers and other people with different academic backgrounds have been chosen for the mission. The ship is self sufficient in every aspect of survival and maintenance. It runs on solar power, collecting energy from the sun with its enormous retractable solar sails. Various forms of plants cultivated by the crew produce oxygen and food. Water is constantly recycled and spare parts for repairs are being made from ore inside the asteroid, which the ship is temporarily attached to on their journey.

    Background:

My proposal is to make a 10-minute short film with segments of animation. This story will only be an introduction to a greater universe of similar science fiction stories. I will ground the story in modern science, philosophy and theology in addition to my own imagination.

I will try to incorporate the following Chinese myth in some way.

A famous Chinese physician once noted that the inhabitants of a valley covered with chrysanthemums, who drank from a river flowing through the valley, lived exceptionally long lives. A tradition evolved that drinking chrysanthemum wine on the 9th day of the 9th month of the year would ensure you a long life. On a practical level, a tea made from the dried flowers is used as a cool and refreshing drink during the heat of summer, and a pillow filled with dried petals will provide relief from the heat while sleeping.

    Intended audience:

You don’t have to be of a certain age to appreciate this kind of story. My target audience is for likeminded people who like to lose themselves in someone else’s imaginary worlds. My ambition is to create a short film that will make its way into a number of film festivals.

Have you thought of approaching a local garden ctre or even large hortic. co. that makes garden equip. or soil, etc. and offering to acknowledge them (in big letters :-) in the credits) for helping you set something up?

Yes, I've thought about it, but haven't done enough research as to figuring out which centres and such that I should contact. I'm going to call around to see if there are anyone willing to help out. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions or know about any decent places in the greater Vancouver area, then feel free share with me.
