Anyone know where one might have soil tested for this disease? I live in Kamloops, B.C. Canada and there is no help here for diagnosis of this disease by way of examination of plant material or soil. Last year, my beautiful 12 year old 'Bloodgood' Japanese Maple died quite suddenly for some unknown reason. All information that I have been able to gather, indicates the likelihood of Verticillium Wilt, but I need to have a diagnosis (not, of course, to save my tree at this point as it is quite thoroughly dead - but in order to determine what might be planted in the area this tree occupies.) I do not particularly want to cut a branch larger than a twig (to examine for the 'coloured ring' that might be an indicator) - as I am considering leaving the skeleton of this tree. My Bloodgood was absolutely beautiful and is the anchor of a very nice shade garden, so I am considering planting vines at the base to achieve a fairly quick leaf cover on the branches. Even if I remove the tree and renovate this garden to suit the increased amount of sun it will receive, I need to know if Verticillium Wilt is the culprit as many plants are susceptible to this disease and will have to be avoided in the choices for replanting. If anyone can advise as to any vines that are immune or resistant to this disease, that would also be appreciated. Via the internet, I have very comprehensive lists of plants that are suitable, but none of these lists include vines. Thanks you to anyone who might help with any of my questions.
