I've searched high and low but am unable to identify this fungus. It grows in the winter during cold weather on dead limbs but not on the bark. Life span seems to be very short at several days. I live west of the Cascades in Washington State. cliff
Welcome wildebeast. See..... http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=47891 This question came up recently. Thanks to woodschmoe I found out it is a "frost flower"!
Thanks for the quick reply, Glad I stumbled onto this website. I usually get into the woods early in the morning and have seen this for years, finally decided to find out what it's called, it did look like ice but the growing had me confused. I set out game cameras for all of the wildlife and in doing so I run across all kinds of vegetation, I especially like mushrooms, fungus, ferns, lichen and moss. Almost like a rain forest. Again thanks for the information, I might put a photo on my blog, http://gamecamera-logbook.blogspot.com/ cliff
