I need some information/help, yesterday my husband was cutting grass and ran over my grape vine. The vine was 1-2 years old, just starting 2nd year and had runners 1 1/2 feet long. It cut the vine off 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch above the base of the plant where the canes grow out of. Will it come back or should I just count my loses and dig it up?

I would not have cut so low unless that is the point where the mower mauled it and you were trying to get clean cut surfaces. Note that "pruning is always stunting" as Carl E. Whitcomb says: you do not increase overall vigor of a plant by reducing its top, quite the opposite in fact.

If your vine was raised from a cutting - as if often done with grapes - it seems it will soon enough come back. If the lawn is so close it is prone to being mown off then likely some of the grass needs to be dug out. As with other specimens placed in turf your vine needs to have a grass-free area around it to get started in. Grass has an inhibiting effect on other kinds of plants, when allowed to grow up to or quite near small specimens.

Clear a space at least 2'-3' across and mulch it, keep it the grass out of it in future.

Thank you, I did not cut the plant any further that is where the mower got it. I do have the grass cleaned from around it, he just was not paying attention and then it was to late. I have mulched it in and the stake had been knocked over. Could you tell me the best type of trellis to put the grapes on. I have a black bullisi, a scuppernong and the 3rd one not real sure what it is someone gave me that one. Thank you again for all your help, I have never tried to grow grapes before.
