Hi CCK, Sounds like you used a shovel to remove the old lawn and moss. You can rent a sod stripper that will take up less soil and be easier to use. Moss grows where the conditions are good for it. That is usually compacted, shady and high acid soil. I would suggest you add as much sunlight to the area as you can by thinning or limbing up trees. You can use a core aerator to help compaction in the future. I'll include links on that. Here's some helpful info from the RHS. http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/problems_lawns.asp I don't know what type of grqss you expect to grow with 3" roots, but that sounds very unrealistic to me. Grass roots can go 3 FEET or a metre in the soil. To replace the missing soil you will need loam. I'd also add 3" of compost and mix it all in with a till. The compost will improve the texture of your soil, improve drainage and add nutrients and good microbes. Here's a US site that explains how to sod a new lawn. The prep is the same for seeding. http://www.garden.org/articles/articles.php?q=show&id=75&page=1 Aeration info: http://www.american-lawns.com/lawns/aeration.html http://www.homeandgardenmakeover.com/lawnaeration.html Newt
