Hello everyone, I hope someone can help... I have just noticed that I have a similar problem to kkyc1's. In as much as I have a single heart shaped leaf in a pot of soil. The leaf is going a nasty dark green and blotchy. It does however have a root ball in the soil with little roots that pop out to get moisture from the air (I assume). It normally lives in our bathroom that gets a lot of moisture when the shower or bath has been used but then during the winter periods we use a de-humidifier to remove the excess moisture. I accidently dropped it in a bath of water the other week and left it to dry out which it has but I was wondering if I should try and re-pot it as the root ball is quite tight now. The soil is bone dry. Any advice on what material to re-pot it in or have I killed it off by drowning it? Any help would be great!! Thanks in advance.
Hi Hellyborus, sorry to hear about your plant. It sounds like you have Hoya kerrii. These are often sold as single-leaf cuttings at home centers around valentine's day, but one problem is that they also are often without a decent section of stem, or the stem is at least not big enough to survive the rooting process. The odd thing is that they can grow vigorous roots and and that one leaf can survive for quite awhile just as-is (if they get excellent drainage), but they usually won't grow a new stem and new leaves unless they originally were cut with a decent size piece of stem. So it's really not looking good for your plant. Are the dark areas changing texture or transparency; like it is perhaps mushing-out inside the leaf? Is this on the lowest section of the leaf? Sometimes it may be possible to cut off the lower rotten area and re-root the top, but you still have the problem that it is unlikely to form a stem and new leaves.
HI again Well unfortunatly things have progressed since my last mail, and very quickly too! it looks as if, as you can see from the attachments, a black fungus or bacteria has started growing within the flesh of the plant to the extent that it broke down the cellular construction of the flesh which has resulted in it falling over and breaking... I dont think there is much else I can do for it now so will have to bid farewell to it and purchase another one but with a much better stem/root system on it. thanks anyway for your help!
