Hi: Some of my date palms have an insect of some kind and would appreciate any help in identifying the insect or suggestions to get rid of them. I have attached the photo with the post. These are mostly attached to bottom side of lower leaves. They are attached very tightly to the leaves and really have to scratch with force to remove. These appear as very small spots (pin head size). Looking closely, they have black oval bodies with tiny yellow center and have cottony growth on top. Upon rubbing the cottony growth dusts off. They are spreading and I have tried Ortho Systemic Insect Killer as well as Rose Pride and Neem Oil. Not even a tiny bit affect of any of these insecticides. Local nursery is unable to identify as their own date palms are infected with these too. But they are saying these are not typical "scale" insects as they do not discharge sticky stuff. Hope to find an answer on this forum. Thanks, - Ali
Are there ants on the leaves as well? Maybe try some white oil. I get different types of scale here and use white oil for all Ed
Thanks Ed: There are no ants anywhere in the yard. I agree with you that these do appear some form of scales. Maybe not typical one but the characteristics are same. I found following article on white oil and will try some today. http://www.abc.net.au/brisbane/stories/s780287.htm Thanks again. -Ali
