Seeds can often be shipped without too much of a problem, especially in smaller quantities for personal use. I would check with the seed producer. They would probably know if they can be shipped to Australia or not. It can sometimes be hard to find non-hybrid seeds, especially in corn. Try searching for Heirloom seeds.

You might try here: http://www.edenseeds.com.au/content/default.asp They list a couple of corn varieties and it doesn't say that they are hybrid. and here's another one: http://www.greenpatchseeds.com.au/vegetables1.html I found these two by looking here: http://www.thegreendirectory.com.au/green-business/gardening/seeds-and-seedlings/. There may be more link there.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the info

I did contact the company about sending the seeds down here but was told it was not allowed due to the Quarantine laws we have....Then i looked at the sites you gave and to my luck i live in Western Australia where once again we have quarantine laws that will not allow me to bring the seeds from over East :) But a quick look this morning at your suggestion about Heirloom might be the way to go.....

Thanks for your time and i hope you have a wonderful Christmas

I am sorry to inform you of this but ALL corn seeds are hybrids. Corn comes from a grass that grows wild in Mexico. You may be able to find some heirloom corn but I don't know how good it would be. I grew up in the corn belt (Indiana U.S.A.) and found that growing good corn of any kind requires a lot of nitrogen, water ,and cool temps. We always planted ours two weeks before last expected frost. We used a high nirogen fertilizer at planting and side dressed it with high nirogen fertilizer at about a foot high (fron tip of finger to wrist).

    Good Luck

Hi, hope you're surviving the hot weather :)
Eden Seeds has 7 varieties of corn seeds and an additional 3 which are organic. They are based in Queensland but post to WA. I have their current catalogue.

greenarrow I think you are confusing hybrid seeds with mutations. All corn varieties may have mutated from this original grass that you mention, but that doesn't make it a hybrid. A hybrid seed is produced by combining two distinct types. They don't breed true and may even be sterile. You can't save seed from hybrids, only from open-pollinated varieties. There are definitely open pollinated varieties of corn. Bantam is one. This site explains it better than I can.

    G'day Duff!:]

This is a great site for heirloom seeds http://www.seedsavers.org/
Notice the multicolored Indian corn, and be sure to download the catalog if just for the photos!:]
(They are totally into biodiversity and say "You will have access to twice as many vegetable varieties as are available from all of the mail-order seed catalogs in both the U.S. and Canada.")

Hi Duffster, seedsavers sounds great but you'll need quarantine clearance to be able to import them into Australia. sadly, you may have to stick with something local
