Hi Everyone: It's me again. Here's 5 more pictures. Hopefully someone can help id some of these guys. Thanks loads!!!! Note: 6936 - Big juice tap root. Still waiting for the first bud to open to see what it's like. 6937 & 6938 - No idea what these guys are 6939 & 6941 - Are these edible lettuces?
Hi -- The two plants with ruffled leaves are leaf lettuces. The tall, thin plants with buds on top are garlic plants that are about to bloom (which means they probably aren't edible anymore). The plant with rounded, narrow leaves looks like horseradish to me--though I'm not 100% positive on that one. If you pull one and it has a large taproot, it's probably horseradish. And the last one, the taller plant with ruffled leaves and flower buds on top is an annual poppy. It will be lovely when it blooms.
I have elephant garlic that blooms every year. I cut the flowers and put them in a vase....they are really neat! About August , when the foliage dies down, I dig the garlic, let it dry, plant some of the bigger bulbs{cloves} for next year and bring my garlic in the house where I keep it in a cool cupboard. I've been doing this for probably 10 to 15 years now.
If you cut the flowers anyway, you should consider eating them in bud - they are delicious. Many market vegetable vendors sell garlic scapes by the bunch.
