Can anyone help me ID this large shrub/tree. It is blooming right now and they flowers/fruit? are incredibly beautiful. I have attached photos. Susie
Euonymus sp. The flowers are tiny and can easily be overlooked. These are the seed capsules, inside are seeds.
Looks like hearts a bustin' (euonymus americanus) A common native shrub in the southeastern states. pic below. Edit: oops. You're in Washington. Could be a wahoo, or a burning bush or something else... Maybe it's a western burning bush (Euonymus occidentalis).
Certainly some sort of spindle Euonymus, but not E. americanus, as that has warty fruit (see Stone's pic). Caution: don't try eating the fruit, spindle fruit are poisonous for people (birds can eat them safely though).
Agree with Michael. There are many different species of Euonymus. But Euonymus americanus it is not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euonymus
Note the narrowness of some of the leaves, that may (or may not) be significant. Otherwise the fruits look to me like those of E. europaeus, this is one of the more prevalent species.
