I would love help in identifying this plant. I have been trying to identify it for a couple of years. It was growing in a field in North Central Florida. The photo was taken the end of October. Wish I had known then to photograph the whole plant including its base. I had the impression at the time that it was a grass-like plant.
Perhaps Tall Elephantsfoot, Elephantopus elatus? http://www.spacecoastwildflowers.com/2010/07/wickham-park-research-july-29-2010.html Scroll about halfway down to 10th entry on page.
It looks like you may have hit on it! Thanks for your help. I will check this out and write back if I think it's a match.
What you have suggested (perhaps Tall Elephantsfoot) is the closest thing that comes to it that I have seen. Unless it is maybe one other species of Elephantopus. I hope I can find the plant again and study the basal leaves and flowers. Thanks again for your good insight.
