My girlfried picked up a interesting plant at a garage sale. We thought it was about to die, so i decided to try to propagate it by takeing a cutting . The plant looked like a cut down tree/shrub, it grows very slowly, and seems to be able to hold water in its leaves for an extended period of time. I tried to break off a piece to try to propagate it and it failed, sort of. The cutting, planted in wet soil, slowly withered section by section, from the bottom, where i broke it off the trunk, on up to the leaves, but the leaves remained green. Then it released the sets of two leaves on its tips. I put these in some wet soil, and they have sprouted roots (yay) . Pic 1 is of the withered cutting with a two leaf section on the tip still green, which just detached. Pic 2, 3, and 4 are replanted tips. The cutting came from a bush with 2 or three inch diameter trunks (it had several trunks that where cut off, none above 12 inches, so it could be a cut down tree of some sort.). So, any idea what this could be? pic 1 pic 2 pic 3 pic 4
After discovering the meaning of the word succulent in plant terminology, I googled for images with the phrase "succulent leaf". And the first picture was the plant i was looking for: Its crassula argentea also called the Jade Plant
Hey jnu, that is great. I am glad you were able to identify it yourself. There are several threads about this plant on the forums and you will find a lot of info on the web and in print as well. Happy growing,
