I need help ID-ing this plant. It's from a grass field outside Grand Rapids, MI. THey were all 2-3 feet tall. I have 3 pictures. a)the flower coming from the bud (i think), b)the flower (again, I think), and c)the bulb-like root that smells very strongly of garlic.... What is this? Does it have any medicinal or culinary uses? Poisonous? Scientific name? etc...?
Hi -- I don't know if this is in a disturbed area (where someone might have planted in the past) or a wild area, but it is some type of allium. I did a quick google on "allium native michigan" and found a .pdf file that indicates there is a native allium being sold by a nursery in Michigan. It is at www.nativeplant.com. The .pdf file contains the latin name.
With the large habit and sprouting bulbils coming out of the flowerhead probably a cultivated species.
