    Hi,

I found this growing next to a potted seedling. Seems to have come from the soil mix that I bought from the nursery. Any ideas what kind of plant it is? It has the interesting habit of folding up its leaves at night.

    Thanks!

It's purslane. We have lots of this weed out in our garden. I've never observed it at night; didn't know it folds up its leaves.

Yes, Portulaca oleracea (purslane). It seems to be a very wide spread weed in N. America. It is edible and nutritious. A few years back I made a salad with it and everyone wondered what that unusual, tasty leaf was.

Thanks for the quick response! I think I'll try making a salad with it tonight!

I also have this plant growing in a pot in Prince Edward Island. I received an Arbutus tree seedling from British Columbia and though the Arbutus died this plant started growing. I posted a picture and a reader from Toronto identified the plant.

I have no idea whether it grows on PEI in the wild. Thanks to the posters here for the great links.
