This bramble appeared in my Mom's garden, and she'd like to know what it is. The berries look similar to a black raspberry, but the leaves are different. The whole plant is wickedly thorny, from the stalks to the stems to the leaves. She doesn't want to try the berries, until she knows what it is. Could be an import of some kind, possibly?

The one photo is of the leaves, and the other of the berries surrounded by unrelated foliage.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

The native blackberry here is R. ursinus. The rest are of foreign origin and often seriously pestiferous. While not as abundant as R. armeniacus, R. laciniatus is also a weed (as well as a commercial crop!) in this region.
