Greetings All, I am new to the community, and have read a few of the other postings on Hibiscus Trees, my questions bigger then a simple pruning.. I want to know if i can cut a section out of this tree and not do too much damage. I beleave the tree is as old as the house.. I just purchased the house and the tree is so large they left it behind as a House Warming gift.. not that I minded its a Gorgous Tree. Very close to the bottom of the trunk the tree has split into 2... the last owners kinda pulled the second part back into the tree as it looked to be running off at a 45* angle. Thats the part i want to cut off.. it makes the tree very ackward to position in the room now that i have my couches in there. so any suggetestions on how to do this without hurting the tree too much would be good, i know a friend suggested i get some tar to put over the cut to stop the tree from bleeding once i decide on if i am going to do this to it or not. I will attach photos of the tree to better help show what im talking about.
welcome to the forum. what Ron said +1. I'll add to be careful when you cut off the limb to leave the collar--don't cut too close to the "V", and don't tear off a strip of bark when you do it. Make a nice clean cut.
Thankyou very much.. I think cutting it back will help me to retrain it and groom it to fit into the space better.. i just wanted to make sure I had some knowledge behind my decision.. im still very nervous to cut it. also when should i cut it.. i noticed theres alot of buds on that branch i want to cut out.. should i wait till the tree has stopped blooming? or cut it out now and let the tree heal?
I wouldn't worry about it. Others may disagree with me here, but I generally follow the old adage, "cut when your blade is sharp." Sometimes there are special reasons to prune or cut limbs from trees or shrubs during specific seasons, but rarely has a tree died from cutting or pruning during the wrong season or at the wrong time. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
