In the interest of eliminating some of the shade in our garden, we're applying to the City of Vancouver to have a 30 foot cedar (at the end of a row of about 10 other cedar) removed. As part of the City's tree removal bylaws, they require us to provide a replacement tree. Unfortunately, seeing as our big goal is to remove the issue of shade, I'm pretty stumped on what kind of tree to get!

Any advice? Something that either stays short or has thin branches would be ideal, I'd imagine, as we're probably going to have to put the tree in more or less the same place as the cedar once was. Trees that produce edible fruit are a plus.

Pictures of the garden a few weeks ago are here: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=50644 although the cedars aren't pictured- you can see the very bottom of their trunks in the pictures of the raspberry canes.

Consider Styrax species or Acer griseum.

Down here Seattle specifies which trees can be planted on streets. Maybe do additional reading of requirements there to see if there is a similar situation.

It's not a street tree, it's on private property.
