So, I've got my check in the mail to the NY Mycological Society and expect to learn a great deal from them. But I still need a field guide and, given the recent scare I had using the less than stellar mushrooming book I bought, I'm now in the market for a higher quality, but relatively easy to decipher, field guide. My emphasis is really on edibility rather than needing a comprehensive overview of all wild mushrooms, but I do want to get more specific in terms of identification methods, inclusive of spore printing. I'm located in NYC and my mushrooming is likely to be limited to the northeastern united states. Any ideas?
Hi Gasdark, You want a book emphasizing Northeast NA, so I can't make any personal suggestions. But there are a few listed here; http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/local_links.php?catid=10 If some good recommendations come up in this thread it would be good to add them to the above collection. Thanks! frog
I highly recommend Mushrooms of Northeastern North America. http://www.amazon.com/Mushrooms-Northeastern-North-America-Bessette/dp/0815603886.
