In The Garden: Need a flower ID

    My niece had this plant start growing and now it is flowering. Can anyone tell me what kind of plant this is? Sorry this picture is not very good. Thank you.

    Castilleja species. These are semi-parasitic on other plants, hard to cultivate. If it came up on its own next to another plant and you dug it up, you should probably put it back where it was if you hope to keep it going.

    It is almost certainly Castilleja coccinea, the scarlet paintbrush. Northeastern USA has no other recorded species.
