Whilst going through some old papers, I ran across this article. Thought that it was worth sharing:

    "Web Site Offers Free Plants"

Want some free flowers, trees, and shrubs?
    Check out:
    http://www.freetreesandplants.com
a Web site that obtains from growers and nurseries millions of unsold plants that would be destroyed.
The free plants are packaged by workers with disabilities in sheltered workshops and are shipped to customers.
Consumers pay processing and shipping costs, which are $6.95 per "unit" of plants. (A tree, for example, is considered a single unit, while two day lilies make up a unit in another category.)
Garden writer and photographer Cheryl Richter and her husband, Greg, of Lincoln, Nebraska, started the program in 2004.
"Each year millions of healthy high-quality plants go unsold and are destroyed," she said. "They go to the dump, are plowed under or get burned or buried. Every plant we save and select for our program is as good or better than those featured in garden centers and renowned garden catalogs."

Sounds like a good idea for plants and people both!
