I am pretty sure this is a cactus but can't figure out which one this is. I took a pic of it from up above and then another of it from the side. OOPS!! EDITING: Made a mistake with my pics. Steve is correct - 2 separate plants in the same bowl.

    i agree with yucca.

you really need to get those plants resituated!! they're in peat and peat is NOT good for most plants - most especially succulents!!!!!

and the rocks on top are probably glued in...another thing that's not so good.

get some cactus soil and some aquarium soil and unpot the whole thing...remove as much of the peat from the roots as is possible and then repot them in a mix of half cactus soil and half aquarium soil (which is bits of ceramic and it's to add extra drainage and aeration). if that container doesn't have drainage, they use something else that does.

    edit:

sorry, i was referring to the other post you made. that one is a crassula and it's looking like it's not getting enough moisture.

yucca and most desert cacti will do okay in sandy soil - they still need good drainage, so always add in something like the aquarium stuff, a little bit of plain potting soil along with the sand. you can also do small rocks, too. i got some of the natural stones at the aquarium store...no coloration added and the stones are raw (not polished).

On the left is Agave filifera.

On the right is Leuchtenbergia principis, a cactus.

Thankyou Johnts71, jocelyn and Cereusly Steve for your replies.

Jocelyn: None of my plants are in peat moss. I do use peat moss very sparingly in my indoor plant soil mixtures. I use potting soil/cactus soil, sand, aquarium soil and sometimes a bit of perlite mixed in - depending on the feel of the mixture. I try my best to make a good drainage for my plants. I also add small rocks in the bottom of those types of bowls. The top rocks are aquarium rocks.

I never glue rocks in anything!! When I purchase little collections of cacti or succulents, I immediately get them repotted.(consider those "rescues"!) I cringe whenever I see rocks glued in plant pots!! How can people do that??? I've even written nasty letters to companies who make collections and glue the rocks on top of cacti collections!!

Thanks again for the help! Steve - you rock!! You obviously know alot about plants!!

like i said, i was referring to one of your other posts - the pot looks just like those in the stores that have the glued-on rocks and there's usually peat underneath.

VERY glad to hear you repot things right away to get the plants into the correct soil!!! i can't tell you how many times i've made that suggestion to people (especially when the plant is a cactus or other succulent) and they don't change it and then the plant dies in a couple months!! then they wonder why!!

i kinda just want to say 'duh!! toldya so!' :)

i don't do that though, that wouldn't be nice...
