I wonder if anyone could kindly help identify this acer, which I have kept for over 20 years. It has been pruned every few years to keep small, and its present size is 0.6m x 1m (h x w). The photos are taken today on 26th April 2020. Thank you.
Hi Acer202020, IMO it looks very similar to Tsuma Gaki or Tsuma Beni. Or a Hybrid seedling from one of the two.
Hi @Acer20202020. It might be a bit of a challenge to tell you the exact name of your maple due the similarities of some jms. I have a Shishi yatsubusa that's similar but not sure if it's been around for 20 years.
Hi Acerholic and LoverOfMaples, great thanks for the response. The three suggested acers are very similar to mine, I think it is closer to Shishi yatsubusa than the other two. Do you know how long Shishi yatsubusa has been around for?
Hi Acer20202020, Shishi Yatsubusa is a compact dwarf maple, its origins like many are in Japan. I agree with LoverOfmaples, it does look very similar. The trouble with naming maples that have lost their original identity tags is often near impossible as there are a few thousand varieties now plus unamed seedlings. Whatever name you set on, all that matters in the end is that you do have a beautiful tree.
