Hi all, I'm new, so, please accept my ignorance, I'll learn fast. I planted some seeds from a tree I got in Estonia on a trip there. They were a small, red, bitter fruit, in clumps. I believe it is Hawthorn, but, have been unable to identify the tree for sure. I've posted a picture to see if anyone can help me? The tree was about 30 feet tall, but, had no leaves when I picked the fruit. Any help is appreciated, Thanks, Henry
Welcome Ygmir: (or is it Yqmir?) That doesn't look at all like hawthorne to me. With the petiole wings and the thorns, I'd be guessing Citrus, but that pretty well exhausts my knowlege of that subject. If you have a photo of the fruit that may help somebody elso narrow down the selection. Ralph
I have seen some pictures of Hawthorn leaves that look similar, or, maybe "Rowan"? I put them in a freezer for a winter, then, planted them. This is what came up. The only other thing I can figure, is, that someone played a trick on me and switched seeds, althogh, it doesn't seem likely. I'm told there are many varieties of Hawthorn, so, I'm hoping someone will recognize this. The trees haven't produced fruit, yet. They are approximately 4 years old, and, about 3 feet tall. Thanks for the reply, Henry Ygmir is my pen name.........
Looks like Citrus seedlings to me too - which definitely won't be what you got in Estonia, these must be from some different seeds that found their way into the seedbed (it happens! birds and squirrels are often to blame). Hawthorn seeds often take 2 years to germinate, so don't give up hope on them yet.
I'll be so bummed if they're not what I thought. I've nurtured them all this time. Not that there's anything wrong with citrus trees, but, they probably won't survive long in my climate. I'm at 2800 feet elevation in the Sierras of northern CA. I'll just hold out hope someone will say, "oh, ya, I've seen that tree in northern Europe, it sure looks like citrus, but, is really........" Thanks, Henry
