Any guidance in naming this mystery shrub in my mother's garden would be greatly appreciated. It has grown back vigorously to head height despite being severely pruned and we'd like to know what it is. It has a red flowers about the size of a quarter, dark glossy green leaves, has some thorns, and has a curious semi-circular secondary leaf that comes out at the branch axil. (Sorry if I'm not using the right names for things here.) I attach pictures.
Looks like Chaenomeles sp. Possibly Chaenomeles speciosa. http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/chsp6.htm https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=C...Q&biw=1407&bih=678&sei=bCVqULLYEsb80QXNzYCIBg
Develop or maintain flat shape by pruning back side shoots that grow away from fence during summer, while still soft and growing.
