We have found a shrub (at Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park) which has leaves that are inset with red berries/seeds. The leaves are roughly 4 inches long and have 4 seeds in each leaf. The seeds are protruding from each side of the leaf, back and front (they really are IN the leaf). They alternate, two on each side of the middle vein, about half way up the leaf. The leaf has serrated edges and is similar in size and shape to a salal leaf. It was found right on the beach. The berries are red on one side and greenish on the other and about the size of a pea. They are hard and green on the inside. We have never seen a leaf with berries actually set right in it and are very curious to know what it is!
It sounds to me like Ochna serrulata, a noxious weed here in NSW australia. Its from south africa and a tremendously hardy plant. Check the web link below to see Ochna http://www.weeds.org.au/cgi-bin/weedident.cgi?tpl=plant.tpl&state=&s=&ibra=all&card=S04
