This little guy showed up announced in one of my idle vegetable plots last fall. I let it grow b/c it didn't look like the any plant that usually shows up where it's not wanted. It looks like it's about to flower - I'd like to know what it is before I let it proliferate. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Are the stems square and the leaves opposite? If that's true, what do the leaves smell like? I can't zoom in to see the leaf arrangement clearly enough to be confident in saying it's a mint, but it's my initial impression.

It sure does look like a mint of some sort. There are many. If so, just put it in an INDESTRUCTIBLE pot and keep it. Otherwise, even in the PNW it will go nuts and spreads everywhere. If your local cats favor it, it may be cat mint (nepeta) if not there are many more possibilities. It's still a pretty plant and can be used to add flavor to "stuff". IE ice Teas and Mint juleps? ;))) barb

Thanks all. As the flowers bloomed it became more obvious that its a digitalis (foxglove). Now the question is: since it's growing in one of my vegetable plots, will it's poison contaminate the tomatoes growing beside it?

    Re: Foxglove (digitalis) & vegetables?

It won't. You'd have to consume the foxglove.

It would be nice to see a photo now of the flowers, because it does not look like a digitalis to me...

Strange looking Digitalis! My guess is a peppermint. Rub a leaf. If it is be careful as the roots go deep and are difficult to contain.

Here are the latest photos of the flowers. I moved the plants to open plot away from veggies...
