Mystery Nut in Beech Maple Forest

    The nut was found in an area with a lot of these saplings around (pics 2-3). There was a big hickory in the area too.

    Looks like an immature Black Walnut nut.

    saplings look like Calycanthus... but their fruit doesn't seem to match what you have there.

    We don't have Calycanthus in my state.

    Hickories do produce nuts, but they have 4 sutures on the nut husk, so don't look like this one ;-)
