I purchased a Catalpa tree that was planted last fall. When it arrived it was sparce on the back side. It is located in the front of my property so I was a little concerned. The landscape company to which I made the purchase said it would FILL OUT. It didn't and I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help it. I am sure it was damaged when I got it. I am a teacher and I feel like I have a special needs tree and want to do everything I can before I have to relocate it and get it replaced.
Reno isn't the best climate for Catalpa, it comes from the eastern States where it rains a lot and the air humidity is high. Doesn't surprise me that it wouldn't do well in desert air. But even where the climate is ideal, it may take a few years to fill out well.
Actually rather prevalent in mostly dry western half of country. In fact, a Catalpa speciosa street tree in hot Walla Walla was a United States National Champion in 1993, as large as or larger than any known in its native region. I do not know the current status of this specimen. Its standing could be checked easily enough by visiting the appropriate part of the National Forests web site.
