I bought a venus fly trap at walmart today Jan 8. I have been reading, and am confused on what to do. The plant was kept at regular indoor temperatures, so how do I go about it know when it should be in it's dormant stage? When it is dormant will it eat bugs, cause it did. Thanks, Leah
I had one once and couldn't figure out out why is was looking so bad when winter came till I found out about the dormant period. I don't think they have to go completely dormant but it is not the time to push it to grow. Resist the urge to touch the traps to make them close because each trap can only close and open about 3 times and then it dies. They don't have to be feed many insects and they are not easy plants to grow. My mistake was letting mine flower, they sometimes die after flowering and mine did. I have heard it is best to use distilled water for them. Here is a link for their care. http://www.pitcherplant.com/care_sheets/flytrap_care.html
Grows on sterile barrens in the wild, probably almost always in the open. Not the best choice for indoor culture. Insectivorous plant specialists will have best cultural tips.
