When I bought it 5-6 years ago, it had fruit. It has never given any fruit since. It appears healthy, gets lots of sun and has not suffered from frost here in the San Francisco Bay area. I don't get it. All my other citrus (lime, lemon, orange) have lots of fruit. I've never pruned it and its about 6' tall. Does anyone have any ideas?
You don't say what the fertilization program is that you give your kumquat, but they need to be fertilized REGULARLY for optimal growth AND for good fruit production, plus a kumquat tree also requires adequate soil moisture in order to give good fruit production. However, I believe the number one problem for your tree, is its location. Kumquats require a high number of heat unites to produce fruit, and I do not think the bay area is warm enough to provide the required level of heat unites. Normally, kumquats are grown in the warmer zones 9-10 such as Southern Florida- Millet (1,376-)
mamalone, I grew Loquats in San Jose, but only found good, sweet, kumquats in Fresno. I would imagine SFO is much too cool and foggy. barb
