I've been admiring the plantings a local restaurant (McMenamen's Kennedy School for you Portlanders) and I've snatched a few samples of leaves and seed pods for you to help me identify this plant as I had forgotten my camera. The habit was very much like a Witch Hazel, of which I have several growing in my yard, but this plant was more compact with much smaller leaves and a tighter, bushier habit unlike the generally open Witch Hazels. Is it some kind of Winter Hazel?
Same family as Hamamelis. I believe it is Fothergilla sp. Probably Fothergilla major. A beautiful shrub for the colour of the leaves in the autumn/fall. http://www.cas.vanderbilt.edu/bioimages/species/foma.htm http://www.google.co.uk/images?hl=e...=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1239&bih=528 The fruits/ seed pods are rounder in Hamamelis. Thanks very much! I think you're right on as the shrubs were all quite compact and small...they were likely a compact/dwarf cultivar of Fothergilla.
