Could anyone help me please with identification of this mushroom? I found it in a mixed forest near Ottawa, Ontario. It does not change color after been cut. Thanks!
Thanks Honoryourlife! Do you mean Boletaceae or Boletus? Does anyone know the species? It is very distinctive: light ring around the brownish-red cap and brownish-red tubes.
Although I have never collected this species, the photos look to me as though it might be Chalciporus rubinellus (formerly Boletus rubinellus). http://www.mushroomthejournal.com/coma/ey/Chalci239.html http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/tex...=image;seq=306;page=root;size=s;frm=frameset; (sorry for the long URL; you might need to copy and paste it into your browser's address bar) . . . but I would want to examine the mushroom before being sure. Best wishes, Michael
Thanks Michael! I have dried this particular specimen and could send it to you. I also have geographic coordinates for it although I don't have a record under which tree it was growing. It was a sparse mixed forest with Pinus strobus, Betula papyrifera and Picea glauca. It looks that this species has quite a variability of morphological features. It might be this species although my specimen is not exactly as on those pictures. Here is another picture from Internet (also not exactly the same as both my specimen and your pictures): http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1348/1194320261_19ac4d2abd.jpg?v=0
