Isn't she beautiful? Don't know what she is though - can anyone point me in the right direction. The pot is approx 5" tall Thanx in advance
This Ficus has appeared in shops all around the world in recent years. I bought one myself in our local Bunnings (Australia's version of Walmart). The label said Ficus retusa, which I always understood is a synonym of F. microcarpa -- but the latest treatment of tropical Asian figs, Flora Malesiana vol 17/2 2005, treats it as distinct species. That does not mean F. retusa is the correct identification of these plants, but it's a start. The plants with these swollen roots are sometimes called "ginseng fig" or "ginseng ficus", doubtless because they look a bit like ginseng roots. There is a suspicion that the swelling is artificially produced by nursery manipulation, rather than being a genetic peculiarity.
http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/search?q=Ficus Theplantlist has both microcarpa and retusa as accepted - some subspecies of retusa are now synonyms of microcarpa. Small correction to Tony's very informative post.
