Hi, I am considering a possible move to the Vancouver area -- would it be all right to bring a potted daphne along, or better to leave it here with a gardener friend? I wasn't sure if daphne would survive up north (I am in Arkansas).

There are dozens of species of Daphne hardy in Vancouver. What kind do you have?

You may also find that the Canadian plant health inspection authorities might not let a potted plant through the border

You aren't moving "up North" climatewise. You are actually moving southward, as far as winter conditions go. Look at the USDA Plant Hardiness Zones map. The mild southern climates swing around and up to parallel the Pacific Coast on this side of the continent.

Daphne would probably do better in the PNW than Arkansas anyway. You might think about planting it? Are you moving to Vancouver WA or BC? If BC, you will probably be able to get it across the border because tropical 'houseplants' (orchids & hardy plants are not allowed without permits) are permitted (or at least they were when I moved) and most customs people wouldn't know the difference if it's in a pot.

Daphne odora will do quite well planted outside in the PNW. Summers are cooler & and winter minumums are warmer than Arkansas, ideal for Daphne. You might just consider buying a new one once you get to Vancouver and save the hassle of smuggling it through customs.
