We have a large 10 - 12 foot Portuguese laurel in our front yard that we planted 3 years ago, and would now like to move it to our backyard. We recently took out an ailing holly and forsythia from the backyard which left a big gaping hole and bare space next to an 8 foot length of fence between our neighbour's back deck and our yard. If we move the laurel we could have instant privacy in the now bare spot against the fence. Can anyone give advice on moving such a large Portuguese laurel? Is it wise to do? Is there a risk of damagint the roots? When and how should we do it? thanks Jane North Vancouver
Talk to landscape contractors that have a history of successfully moving such specimens, find out cost and feasibility - you may find you prefer to buy a new plant and wait for it to fill in. Note in particular that there is a big difference between how a completely open view and a partly screened one reads psychologically - it often is not necessary to fully plug an entire gap or hole in order to be placated adequately. At least for the time being.
Thanks - good suggestion. If I could figure out how to upload a photo I would - I've tried the Upload a File but no luck. If we plant smaller laurels it will take 3-4 years to fill out/grow up to the height we need and we are in our 70's - while I sincerely hope we have many more years to enjoy our yard, it's not like we're 40! I will speak to a landscaper - we've had them over to get a quote on buying and planting new ones, so I'll get a quote to move the laurel too.
